Terrarium Plant Care
Tiny plants, big personality. Here’s how to keep your succulent or cactus terrarium happy, healthy, and looking cute long after you bring it home.
Succulent Terrariums
- Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. A few hours of direct morning sun is okay.
- Water: Water very sparingly. Only water when soil is completely dry.
- Fertilizer: Optional. Use diluted succulent fertilizer once a month during growing season.
- Soil: Use a well-draining cactus/succulent mix.
Overwatering is the fastest way to kill a succulent.
Cactus Terrariums
- Light: Bright, direct sunlight is ideal. South or west-facing windows work best.
- Water: Only water when soil is bone dry, usually every 3–4 weeks.
- Fertilizer: Optional. Use diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during growing season.
- Soil: Use well-draining cactus soil. Sand or gravel can help with drainage.
- Airflow: Open terrariums are best. Closed ones can cause rot.
Avoid misting. Cacti prefer dry air.
General Terrarium Tips
Watch the Light
Most terrariums love bright light, but avoid harsh afternoon sun that can overheat glass vessels.
Less Water, More Patience
Terrariums hold moisture longer than normal pots. Always check the soil before watering.
Give Plants Space
Avoid overcrowding. Plants need room to grow and breathe.
Clean It Up
Remove dead leaves promptly to help prevent mold and keep your terrarium looking fresh.
Quick Reminder
Succulents and cacti may look cute together, but they do not always want the same care. Succulents usually like a little more water, while cacti prefer dry conditions.
